Using Pepper Spray As Personal Defense Tool

Today’s changing economical conditions compel everyday people to turn to legal, yet highly effective weapons for self defense. Raising crime rates are resulting in more and more Americans falling victim to violent crime. Self Defense Spray is emerging as a personal defense ‘tool of choice’ as they are effective, non lethal and relatively inexpensive.

Self defense spray or pepper spray is legal and does not require a permit to carry, however, some states have some restrictions regarding size and/or OC concentration. Always check with your state before purchasing a pepper spray.

OC is an inflammatory agent, meaning that coming in contact with the substance means that capillaries will dilate in the mucus membranes of the body. OC causes irritation, swelling, and tearing resulting in temporary blindness. Breathing will be restricted. A pepper spray to an assailants face is a very effective technique causing temporary incapacitation.

The user must be careful to only use a self defense spray when absolutely necessary. However, when a credible threat to the safety or health emerges, use of the spray must be quick and determined.

There are a few safety tips we recommend when carrying pepper spray as a personal defense weapon.

1. Always hold the dispenser upright in your hand and place the thumb on the top of the spray while being careful to point the dispensing end away from you. Keeping the dispenser handy is key to being prepared for a potential attack.

2. Should the time arise to use the spray, aim the spray at the attackers face. Then move the stream in figure-eight pattern to make it difficult for the attacker to avoid it.

3. Work the spray into the attacker’s eyes and mouth. The spray may not completely stop the attack, but it will slow the attacker down long enough to escape. Contact law enforcement at the earliest safe opportunity.

Pepper and defense sprays can be disguised in a number of clever packaging ways. Some appear to be lipstick cases, cellular telephones and as key chains. However, make sure to acqire a spray containing the “OC” chemical. Other types may be advertised as ‘effective’ but OC is proven to work when it matters most.

Personal safety is an individual responsibility and a good pepper or self defense spray is a solid investment in one’s peace of mind.
