The Truth About Men and Yeast Infections

Genital yeast infections are common in women, but what about men? Could you and your male sexual partner pass yeast infections back and forth?

It’s a man’s world, goes the old song — and this may be just as true in the world of yeast infections. Candida, the type of yeast that causes vaginal yeast infections, can strike women with burning, itching misery — and leave their men untouched.

So if you’re wondering whether your man is playing a role in your yeast infections, you probably can count him out, says Steven Goldstein, MD, professor of obstetrics and gynecology at New York University Langone Medical Center in New York City.

Yeast Infections Aren’t Gender Neutral

“Basically, men don’t get yeast infections in the way that women do,” says Dr. Goldstein. In fact, Goldstein argues that “infection” isn’t the right word to use. Candida lives naturally in a woman’s vagina — and what we refer to as a yeast infection is really an imbalance (his preferred term) where a change in the natural environment of a woman’s vagina allows the Candida (or yeast) to overgrow, causing the symptoms that give women trouble.

There are many possible reasons for this shift in balance, including recent use of antibiotics and some birth control pills, says Goldstein — but probably not because a man gave you a yeast infection through sexual intercourse. “It’s not like it gets passed back and forth,” says Goldstein.

And while women suffer through the itching and burning of excess Candida, a man is likely to have irritating symptoms only if he has vaginal intercourse with a woman whose acid balance is skewed to the more acidic side — causing his penis to temporarily feel a small degree of what she is experiencing.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that on rare occasions men can get yeast infections on the penis — and that when they do, the primary symptom is an itchy rash on their penis. Genital yeast infections tend to be more common in men with weak immune systems.

How Men Should Treat Yeast Infections

A man can use the same over-the-counter antifungal creams that women use in their vaginas to treat a yeast infection, by applying to his penis. In a very troublesome case, a doctor may prescribe an oral yeast infection treatment such as Diflucan (fluconazole). As with women, if your man suspects a yeast infection, it’s always worth a trip to the doctor to get a diagnosis and make sure he is treating the right infection with the right medications.

Meanwhile, if you’re treating a yeast infection, it might be a good idea to skip intercourse until you’ve finished the entire course of treatment. This is more about your own comfort than “infection” control, says Goldstein. The itching and burning of a yeast infection doesn’t add to the sexual experience.

If you have used all of your yeast infection medication and symptoms remain, it’s time to see your doctor, says Goldstein. You may have a different kind of infection, such as bacterial vaginosis or trichomoniasis, that requires prescription medications for treatment. Those are infections that are more likely to require treatment for your partner as well, says Goldstein.

So the good news is this: As aggravating as a yeast infection can be, it’s highly unlikely you’ll involve your partner beyond needing to take a sex break for a few days while you clear up your Candida imbalance.
