Obesity, A Diet And Lifestyle Problem Or Is It Really In Your Genes?
Health experts seem divided on the causes of obesity however all experts agree the obesity problem is sweeping the world at an alarming rate. On one hand some experts claim a genetic flaw is the main cause of the problem whilst others argue a strong case for lack of exercise, modern lifestyle and poor diet being the cause in the majority of cases for overweight to obese people.
You no doubt will have your own personal opinions on this subject and its causes but fair to say whatever your views there needs to be more debate highlighting this growing epidemic.
Obesity is a snowballing epidemic , gathering momentum at an alarming rate it has already affected more than 31% of all Americans, 25% of Mexicans, 23% of United Kingdom residents and unfortunately the list goes on and on, where will it all end?
Well one thing all the experts will agree on, this killer knows no boundaries; it does not care if you are a man, woman or a child, it is not caring of where you live but one thing is certain this epidemic does thrive on the way you live.
Now just thinking outside the circle for a moment and not to brush aside the findings by the many experts in this field nor the countless debates that have taken place relating to the genetic verses diet and lifestyle findings; what I would like to do here is take a look at these issues from a personal perspective.
There are many good articles written that lay support to the genetic argument however here I will look at modern day lifestyle and family diet issues. True I cannot claim formal qualifications as an expert in these fields however what I do have is close personal contact with obese persons and common sense observations of families in everyday life situations.
Next time you are sitting enjoying a leisurely coffee at the local shopping mall or sitting in a busy park having a relax, just watch the people as they walk by you. In a relatively short period of time you will come to notice a lot of families walking by that obviously don’t observe a healthy diet. Why do I say this? Just take a look at what are they eating, you guessed it “junk food” you know a nice big burger and fries, cookies, donuts, soft drink and what’s that in the other hand an ice cream, just what a healthy diet would call for, could this have any bearing on why Dad, Mum and all the kids are all a bit on the overweight side, and here comes mans best friend the family dog who looks like he could shed a few pounds too. Now lets be honest it is hard to put forward an argument for the genetics side of the debate here.
Off to the local shopping mall and lets see what these families are buying for the family diet this week. A glance in the direction of the shopping trolley as it passes you sees Mum, Dad and the kids have put a selection of their favorite diet items in basket to consume for the next week. Observation is, all members of this family would be likely classed as obese, so lets look at the contents of the shopping basket, okay we have soft drinks, frozen pizza, tins of food, big packet of biscuits, several loaves of bread, cakes, jam, there must be some fresh produce in that shopping basket, or was there?
Agreed that is being a little cynical, but it is also, unfortunately in many cases, so true.
If we are to be honest with ourselves, everyone knows poor diet, modern life, and an “I’ll exercise tomorrow” approach to just 30 minutes exercise a day is the biggest assist we can give to helping this obesity plague take a strangle hold on all our societies. There is little doubt that a certain percentage of the world population does have a genetic connection to the inability to lose weight, no argument here but we must also be honest with ourselves and our families, it can’t be a genetic problem when all members of the family are grossly overweight, including the family pets, this is purely just bad diet and lifestyle choices.
