How To Become An Authentic Leader In Business Management

Understanding how to become an authentic leader of a department in a business is the first priority for anyone who wants to succeed in management. Being a manager should mean much more than just issuing orders; a good manager needs to get superior job performance by helping the staff excel. It is a matter of mutual trust and dependence, not of ‘I can fire you if you fail to please me.’

A manager who thoroughly understands the job that needs to be done has a good chance of winning the respect of the people who actually do the job. When assuming a new leading role in an unfamiliar area of employment, it will be better to openly express a need to and an interest in learning. The manager should enlist the senior members of the staff and let them know that their input will be appreciated.

The manager needs to understand the job and its requirements to earn the respect of the staff. Then he or she needs to explain the job to staff members if necessary and clearly outline expectations. Job requirements should be viewed as training and learning experiences at first, not as ‘Pass Fail’ tests. Only if an employee is unable or unwilling to achieve the required results should the drastic step of firing be considered.

It will sometimes be necessary to terminate the employment of an individual, but this is a failure of leadership as much as it is of job performance. The manager should examine the situation to see what went wrong or failed to happen, so that future situations may have a happier outcome.

It is important to follow the policies that are in force, either within the department or throughout the company. Following policy and treating all employees alike in evaluating job performance is vital for a manger to be respected as impartial. A manager who cannot be professional with all staff members is unworthy of a position of authority. Giving preferential treatment to some employees is a sure way to lose the confidence of all, including those who are willing to take advantage.

It is impossible to please everyone, but staff is quick to recognize sincerity and true appreciation of the reality of the job arena. It may seem like a big challenge to meet the expectations of a whole crew, but those who are suited to leadership will be able to handle it. A simple ‘Thank You’ for a job well done, or an acknowledgment of outstanding performance in one instance will go far to offset the occasional inadvertent injustice.

With a sincere desire to get the finest performance from your staff, with an eye for detail, and with a lot of time spent being involved with all aspects of the job, you can show the leadership your staff both needs and will respond to. If they know that you want them to succeed and that you will rise or fall right along with them, they will do their best for you if not for the company who pays them.

How to be an authentic leader needs the basic qualities of being a good person, which include honesty, consideration for others, and a willingness to work with others toward a common goal. Add attention to detail and a capacity for hard work, and you have all that is needed to manage others to mutual advantage.

Authentic leadership is a talent that few people are born with, but it can be learned. When you want to take part in business life coaching, you can practice the methods and techniques for true leadership.
