Cranberry Capsules Battle Infections

If you have had a bladder infection before you know that it can be painful and even embarrassing. For some unlucky people, urine infections and infections in the bladder itself are a regular occurrence and occur every few months. Poor hygiene practices and regular events are normally to blame for regular urinary tract infections. Women are more likely to suffer from urinary tract infections (UTIs) because of the shortness of the urethra and the positioning of the meatus on a female’s body.

So Why do we get UTIs? The urinary tract can become infected in two ways; from the top or from the bottom. It is rare for older children and adults to have top-caused infections however. Bacteria get into the urethra and can then travel up into the bladder, the ureter (linking the kidneys to the bladder) and even the kidneys if the infection remains undiagnosed for a long time. If the kidneys are left untreated they may begin to fail or the sufferer might develop seriously low blood pressure levels.

Bacteria can get into the urethra through the meatus for several reasons. The bacteria in faeces can cause UTIs in children who wear nappies as it is in close proximity to the meatus for an extended time. Girls who wipe back-to-front are at greater risk of developing a UTI as any bacteria around the anus is moved towards the meatus. The friction experienced during intercourse can also be a factor in UTIs which is why urination is recommended after sex.

Whilst there are many other factors in the development of UTIs, the ones mentioned above are the most common. Symptoms of a UTI include pain during urination, abdominal and lower back pain and there can sometimes be blood in the urine. However some people experience no symptoms at all when they have an infection, which can lead to more serious health problems if it doesn’t fix itself.

For mild infections you can take cranberry capsules and the supplements can be taken as a preventative as well because they contain high levels of antioxidants. The natural qualities of cranberries can reduce the discomfort felt from a UTI and help to kill off bacteria before it develops into an infection. Visit a doctor if you notice blood in your urine or the pain becomes too much, as they will be able to put you on the right course of treatment. If you regularly suffer from UTIs, why not start taking cranberry capsules, you might see a big difference.
