Composition And Use Of Personal Defense Sprays

Effective self defense tools are essential for personal safety. Especially in many urban areas, having a useful and readily available method of defense brings peace of mind to day to day living. In some cases, it can help the user avoid becoming the victim of a violent attack. The chemical that makes self defense spray effecive is a derivative of pepper capsacian and is made useful by aerosol dispersal.
Available without a permit, defense sprays are easy to acquire, but some states restrict some types and chemicals. The common pepper spray contains the “OC” derivative, so always check the type of spray prior to purchase.
These sprays are of course inflammatory to ones coming in contact with it. Pepper spray or defense sprays containing CS or CN chemicals have been proven not as effective as OC (oleoresin capsicum) . When hit with an OC spray, the recipient will expeirence pain and temporary blindness as the chemical causes irritation, swelling of mucous membranes and tearing of the eyes.
The user must be careful to only use a self defense spray when absolutely necessary. However, when a credible threat to the safety or health emerges, use of the spray must be quick and determined.
There are a few safety tips we recommend when carrying pepper spray as a personal defense weapon..
1. Always hold the dispenser upright in your hand and place the thumb on the top of the spray while being careful to point the dispensing end away from you. Keeping the dispenser handy is key to being prepared for a potential attack.
2. When confronting a threat, shoot the spray at the attackers face and move it in a back and forth motion or figure 8 pattern while walking backwards away from the assailant. If possible, try to stand up wind to reduce the chance of self contamination.
3. Ensure that you get the spray into the mouth and eyes. Even if the stream does not halt the assault it may will slow the attacker down to allow one to escape the situation. Of course contact law enforcement by dialling 911 immediately.
Self defense sprays are available in a variety of packages including lipstick cases, fake cell phones and key chain ornaments. Remember though to find a spray containing the OC chemical as others are simply not as effective.
Pepper spray is an effective self defense weapon, however care must be taken to recognize a credible threat before using it for self defense reasons.
