Candida Albicans – Micro-Organisms That Live On And In You Throughout Your Life
Yeast is a fungus. They are different from plants in many ways, but the main difference is that they don’t have the chlorophyll like all plants do. Another difference is their inability to make their own food. They inhabit cool and hot climates, and can live everywhere, even in the air that we breathe. We will find fungi mostly in moist environments, where nourishment is readily available. They thrive in leftover organic materials, manure, brackish water and similar environments.
Many fungi are ‘good’ as far as nature and people are concerned, because they break down trash and return it to the basic elements that are then returned to the soil to serve as food for plants. They are involved in keeping the natural balance and without fungus we would have no bread, some cakes or wine, because it is the yeast that turns them by fermentation into what they eventually become.
However, fungi are not always beneficial. You might be surprised to know, that from the moment we were born we all are living covered with microorganisms like bacteria and yeast. These microbes live on every part of you, externally and internally. We may say that our complete bodies are filled with microbes from inside out.
Among millions of micro-organisms that live on and in us throughout our life, there are many different types of yeasts. But luckily, there are only a few yeast strains that can become harmful in certain conditions in our body. Candida Albicans is the yeast strain that causes yeast infections once it overgrows the healthy bacteria that keep them under control.
Candida lives in the moist parts of our bodies and all over the skin. It is a common inhabitant of the bowel, and when everything is normal it actually helps to keep regular bowel movements.
Since it is present everywhere, this yeast gets on newborn babies either during or shortly after birth, but if the baby has a normal immune system it remains harmless. Some babies however do not have a strong immune system and that is the reason that they are often prone to mouth yeast infections and diaper rash in the first few months.
Although we have billions of microbes living on our body by the time we are adults, in most cases this will not cause us any trouble at all. Regarding Candida, there are other bacteria on your skin that fight against this yeast for the same food sources, and consequently this keeps the Candida cell growth under control. You see, there is a natural balance between all of these different microbes, and as long as this balance is maintained, you will remain healthy. Unfortunately, sometimes this balance is interrupted and this is the condition that will cause a yeast infection.
